India displace South Africa to go top of ICC Test rankings

India displace South Africa to take the top spot in ICC Test rankings after the latter lost the third Test against England in Johannesburg on Saturday (January 16), giving Alastair Cook & Co. an unassailable 2-0 lead in the four-Test series.

India, with 110 points, have gained a slender 1-point lead over Australia with AB de Villiers's men sliding down to third spot.

South Africa have endured a prolonged rough patch in Tests and are yet to record a win since January 2015 (nine Tests - four draws, five losses). India followed up their historic series win in Sri Lanka in late 2015 with a thumping 3-0 series win over South Africa at home which propelled them to the second spot and Saturday's development takes them to No. 1 position for the first time in five years - since the 4-0 whitewash at the hands of England in 2011.

The new high however, could soon be challenged as Australia have the chance to usurp Virat Kohli & Co. when they tour New Zealand for a two-Test series in February. A 1-0 victory will be enough for Steven Smith's side to go top.
